I went independent 5 years ago and it’s been an exciting journey, as I detailed in this LinkedIn post. Whenever I run into another consultant and I tell them what I’m up to, they often say “I’ve always thought about going independent, I just don’t know where to start” or “how do you find work?” or “how much can you make?”

Going independent definitely isn’t for everyone though some people can find it very rewarding. In fact, if you’re a match to this style of working it could be one of the best things you ever do.  It has been for me. Over the past few years, many of my friends and colleagues have reached out to ask me how I did it.

I’ve spent hours explaining over how to find work, how much to charge, how to setup your company, how to run payroll, how to save on taxes, and many other topics.  I found that I kept going over the same questions with each person so I figured, let’s get this all into a book.  That’s how I created the Bandwidth Hero Blueprint.  It’s the exact system I follow to be a successful independent consultant and grow it into a successful business.

Going independent changed my life.  Initially, this system provided me with a boost in income and more flexibility with my time.  Now, its catapulted me into running a small consulting firm with three full time consultants working alongside me.  I can take my own project while supporting them, or use my time to invest in other endeavors.

Lately, I’ve been pursuing several ideas which include writing this book and launching the Bandwidth Hero platform which is dedicated to helping other consultants become independent and more reliably find work with consulting companies.

Other consultants I know have used this system to travel the world, build their dream home, or just enjoy the nicer things in life.  Some people thrive well within the corporate structure and keep leveling up within a company or even between multiple companies.  Others want to run free, escaping the overload of team meetings, mandatory trainings, and other non-project work.  They long for independence to decide when and how they work.
